The HP Secure Authentication Mobile functions similarly to Smart Card. It utilizes both a QR code and a BLE button that, when pressed, generates a unique set of 16 digits. These digits are specific to the user's mobile phone and their Microsoft user name at the time of registration and Authentication.
These hashed digits serve as unique identifiers that link to your account ID within our API-hosted servers. With the upcoming release of V4 in October 2025, customers will gain the ability to self-host their own Badge IDs, offering greater flexibility and control over credential management.
If you have a second mobile phone, it will generate a second set of IDs, resulting in a total possibility of four unique IDs associated with your login user name. This is comparable to having four Smart cards registered under your name.
When HP Authentication Manager is set for MFA Enabled!(Default)
It's important to note that even if someone gains access to the HP Secure Authentication Mobile app on your phone, they would still need to unlock the users Microsoft Authenticator Mobile app using a PIN, face recognition, biometrics, or voice commands. Furthermore, they would need to enter the two-digit Microsoft number and once again using the PIN, face recognition, biometrics, or voice command to confirm the number.
The HP Secure Authentication Mobile app (Badge/BLE/QRCode) allows users to unlock the app using their phone’s built-in biometric features before scanning a QR code or transmitting a BLE signal. This enhances both security and user convenience.
By implementing these security measures, we ensure an additional layer of protection for your authentication process.
When MFA is Disabled
Customers have the rights to disable the Passwordless MFA process for their Printers, however please be warned that if you are using Smart Cards/ Badges then any person can covertly use the person card to Sign-in and therefore they will not be challenged by the Microsoft Authenticator Application and thus have full access to the users Email, OneDrive and SharePoint files. Please consider this option very carefully.
We do have ways to ensure Card Users can be secured by using our unique CypherCard which contains a built-in Biometric Finger Print Reader for those wishing to use Smart Cards only and No Mobile Phones.
Tips
To minimise the number of Card IDs a user requires, it is essential that all Card/BLE readers are configured to output the exact same ID consistently across all devices. Failure to do so will result in users needing to register their cards or BLE credentials multiple times, leading to inefficiencies and user frustration.
